Questions: Swedish Group Psychology

1. What is cohesion and how does it relate to group productivity according to the course book? Explain and exemplify with studies.

2. Describe Tuckman’s group development model – which stages are there in the model and what do they entail?

3. Describe GRID, Situational leadership, and Transformational/Transactional leadership. What are the main strengths and weaknesses of these different leadership models, and what are the main differences between them?

4. Describe the main antecedent conditions and the consequences of groupthink. Exemplify from the film “No End in Sight”.

5. Briefly describe the Robber’s Cave Study. What were the main findings and which lessons/conclusions can be drawn from the results of the experiment?

6. You, as the project leader, are about to start a new group that will be promoting a new digital product on the market. How do you select your group? What do you have to take in to consideration when you put this group together with regards to what is written about cohesion and development?

7. The work group, of 55 persons, has just got a new leader. The old leader was very autocratic. He was the type of leader that expected complete obedience. The new leader on the other hand is a democratic leader that expects everyone to take their own responsibility. After a month it is clear that the work group has been divided into three groups. One group is against, one for the new leader and one group is doing as little as possible while no one is checking what they are doing and has therefore not taken sides.

A) To get things back to normal and to get the group working again the new leader invites a psychologist to do some work with the group. The psychologist is very interested in research so he asks you to make up a research plan. The questions he would like to get answers to are: How much does this stress the group and is there any ill health arising because of this stress?; How many are against the new leader and how many like the new leader style and why?; and finally, on a deeper level, What are the biggest concerns in the workgroup? Suggest methods etc. and how to conduct this research task and reason around you choice.

B) What are the differences between an autocratic and a democratic leader? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the two different styles of leadership? What do you prefer and why?

8. You have been under a lot of stress at home with your partner. After a while this takes a toll on your work capacity. Why is this happening and what negative factors are at work in this situation?
